Let’s celebrate Christmas magic at the historic Marshall Field’s store!
For millions of people over the years, visiting Marshall Field’s was a treasured annual holiday tradition. Over the past few years, so many people making their annual Christmas trip to downtown Chicago have joined me for this tour! I am honored to help keep this beloved place alive in our memories and our hearts.
How fortunate we are to still have this huge, landmark store to wander around in. The iconic clocks and the dazzling Tiffany ceiling are still with us, as thrilling as always. And through the modern day bustle of shoppers, we will discover some secret historic parts of the store. Macy’s has continued some beloved holiday traditions: the Walnut Room and the Great Tree, along with themed holiday windows. And isn’t it lovely to smell Frango mints in the air?
But on this tour, we go further than that. On a specially planned route through the store, we travel back in time to see, feel, hear, smell, taste what Field’s was like all those years ago. Using festive historic photos, video, and music, we immerse ourselves in Christmas the way it used to be in Chicago, on State Street, when shopping was a magical experience.
Wendy did her homework on the Fields Christmas tour. She put a lot into showing us so many details with pictures, dialogue and a video. Wendy took us through the different buildings of Marshall Fields. She pointed out historic fixtures, ceilings and notable shoppers from long ago to the present. Very interesting and most enjoyable tour. Thank you Wendy. ~Mary
Using this glorious store as a backdrop for Field’s memories, we will explore:
- The fascinating history of Marshall Field & Company
- The story behind the famous display windows of years past
- The history of the Walnut Room and the Great Tree
- The magical Toy Department that ignited children’s imaginations
- Santa and his Cozy Cloud Cottage
- Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer’s arch rival: Uncle Mistletoe
- The stunning Field’s main floor Christmas decorations over the years
You know that Frango mints will be involved.
Wendy guided us on a fun & offbeat journey through the the colorful history of famed Chicago retail emporium, Marshall Field’s. She highlighted the holiday traditions that generations of Chicagoans have come to love, and shared fascinating stories about the men and women who started a retail revolution that swept the globe! Add the tasty Frango mints, the architectural gems ‘hiding in plain sight” and Wendy’s thoughtful selection of vintage media and we had a tremendously satisfying experience! I recommend the tour for visitors and locals alike! ~Jennifer
