I came across this (low-res) image of the Marshall Field’s store on State Street in Chicago’s Loop, with no accompanying information. It appears to be from the 1960s. We are in the North Atrium on the west side of the store, looking down at the main floor. Chandeliers – long gone – light the way. Thank you to reader Marlene for inquiring about them and informing me that they were probably removed some 40 years ago. If you have any information or memories about the chandeliers at Field’s, please let me know, and I will keep digging.
These were not hanging chandeliers, rather giant candelabras. I remember seeing them sometime into the seventies. They were used “off season” on top of the display cases in the famous Main Aisle, when Christmas displays, for example, were not being displayed. I always thought they were simple, yet so elegant.
Thank you for this, Jeff! That makes more sense. I never saw them in any of the many Christmas photographs. And also wondered how they would be hanging down… You have solved the mysteries!
Thank you, Wendy! The “candelabras” were beautiful, although I still remember crystal chandeliers in the main store. If no one else does, I’ll have to admit my mind’s eye also needs a new spectacle prescription!
